Questions about fish, shellfish, or game meat, canned

What is the FDA serving size for fish, shellfish, or game meat, canned?

The FDA reference amount (RACC) for fish, shellfish, or game meat, canned is 85 g. The label states the serving as “__ piece(s) (__ g) for discrete pieces; __ cup(s) (__ g); 3 oz (85 g/__ cup) for products that are difficult to measure the g weight of cup measure (e.g., tuna); 3 oz (85 g/__ pieces) for products that naturally vary in size (e.g., sardines)”, with your product’s numbers filled in.

Is the RACC the same as the serving size?

No. The RACC is the reference amount FDA sets for the whole category. The serving size is what your label declares, in pieces or a household measure plus grams or mL, worked out from the RACC for your product.

When does a label need two columns?

When a product is packaged and sold on its own and the package holds 200% to 300% of the RACC, the label shows two columns: per serving and per package. A package under 200% of the RACC is a single serving, so the whole package is the serving.

Why does servings per container say “about”?

Servings per container is rounded to the nearest whole number, or to the nearest half between 2 and 5 servings. FDA lets a label put “about” in front of the rounded number.

Where do these numbers come from?
