What is the FDA Daily Value?
A Daily Value (DV) is the reference amount of a nutrient the FDA recommends for one day, used to calculate the %DV shown on the Nutrition Facts label. Daily Values come in two forms — Reference Daily Intakes (RDIs) for vitamins and minerals and Daily Reference Values (DRVs) for macronutrients (for example, the Daily Value for sodium is 2,300 mg) — and FDA sets a separate set for each population group: adults and children 4 years and older, children 1 through 3 years, infants through 12 months, and pregnant and lactating women. All of them are established in 21 CFR 101.9.
How do I convert an amount to %DV?
Divide the amount of a nutrient in a serving by its FDA Daily Value and multiply by 100. For example, a serving with 460 mg of sodium provides 460 mg ÷ 2,300 mg × 100 = 20% DV, because the Daily Value for sodium is 2,300 mg (21 CFR 101.9).
What does 5% DV or 20% DV mean — is 20% a lot?
FDA's own guidance is that 5% DV or less of a nutrient per serving is a little, and 20% DV or more is a lot. Use it to eat more of the nutrients you want (such as dietary fiber, calcium, and potassium) and less of those you want to limit (such as saturated fat, sodium, and added sugars). For sodium, whose Daily Value is 2,300 mg, that means 115 mg in a serving is a little and 460 mg is a lot.

Are the Daily Values different for children, infants, or pregnancy?
Yes. FDA establishes four sets of Daily Values in 21 CFR 101.9 — for adults and children 4 years and older, children 1 through 3 years, infants through 12 months, and pregnant and lactating women — and a label aimed at one of those groups uses that group's figures. Calcium, for instance, has a Daily Value of 1,300 mg for adults and children 4+, but 700 mg for children 1 through 3 years. What's the difference between an RDI and a DRV?
A Reference Daily Intake (RDI) is a fixed FDA target for a vitamin or mineral — like vitamin C or calcium — that isn't tied to calorie intake. A Daily Reference Value (DRV) applies to macronutrients and other food components. Some DRVs are derived from a 2,000-calorie daily diet — total fat (78 g), saturated fat, total carbohydrate, protein, and dietary fiber — while others are fixed limits that do not scale with calories, including sodium (2,300 mg), cholesterol, and potassium. The FDA publishes both RDIs and DRVs as Daily Values in 21 CFR 101.9.
Is %DV calculated from the declared amount or the actual amount?
The percent shall be calculated by dividing either the amount declared on the label for each nutrient or the actual amount of each nutrient (i.e., before rounding) by the DRV for the nutrient, except that the percent for protein shall be calculated as specified in paragraph (c)(7)(ii) of this section.
How are vitamin and mineral %DV values rounded?
The percentages for vitamins and minerals shall be expressed to the nearest 2-percent increment up to and including the 10-percent level, the nearest 5-percent increment above 10 percent and up to and including the 50-percent level, and the nearest 10-percent increment above the 50-percent level.
