## How is trans fat declared on a Nutrition Facts label?

Trans fat is a required line on the Nutrition Facts label, stated in grams per serving. (21 CFR 101.9(c)(2)(ii)) It may be left off when a serving has less than 0.5 gram of total fat and the label makes no claim about fat, fatty acids or cholesterol. (21 CFR 101.9(c)(2)(ii)) Except on the simplified format, the label then says “Not a significant source of trans fat” at the bottom of the nutrient table. (21 CFR 101.9(c)(2)(ii)) When it is declared, the word “trans” may be set in italics. (21 CFR 101.9(c)(2)(ii))
